Yacht Design | CFD based Performance Analysis

Computational fluid dynamics plays an increasingly important role in the design and analysis of yachts both in racing and recreational realms. The key benefit of utilizing computational methods in the design process are the tremendous cost savings that are otherwise tied to the manufacturing of numerous prototypes to be tested at towing tank facilities.

CFD offers a complete platform for parametrizing the design space and automatically testing the aero/hydro-dynamic performance of hundreds of design variations. The results can be categorized by design parameters or even reduced to a single number pointing to the winning design.

An often understated winning point for CFD is its ability to serve as an in depth flow data analysis and visualization platform. Utilizing a desktop PC, the designer can validate the performance data, gain insight into the flow phenomena and develop ways to improve upon the design

CAEbridge Sailing Yacht Design Study

CAEbridge is enhancing its capabilities to improve CFD process in the following areas:

  • Automatic CAD to Grid generation capability taking all associated pre-processing pains out of the picture
  • Payload computations for hull trim evaluations in both static and dynamic conditions
  • Modeling of the interaction between waves, wind and boat with complete simulations
  • Parametrization of the design space for automatic optimization

As CAEbridge, we believe there are strong barriers to the integration of CFD technology in the yacht design process. These barriers can be overcome by identifying the specific needs and work styles of designers and offering customized tools that are easy to use and just meet the exact requirements. In this regard, CAEbridge is keen on pursuing  consulting projects to address the urgent needs for its clients and to evolve industry specific simulation products.
